Hazelnuts come from the Hazel (Corylus) tree, and are also called “cobnuts” or “filbert nuts.” The tree is native to the Northern Hemisphere, has rounded leaves with serrated edges, and very small pale yellow or red flowers that bloom in spring. The nuts themselves grow on the trees in husks, then fall out when ripe, about 7-8 months after pollination. The kernel is edible in many ways—raw, roasted, minced, sliced, powdered, or ground into a paste. Hazelnuts are used to make praline, Frangelico liqueur, hazelnut butter, and pastes (like Nutella), and are often added to candies and truffles. The oil is also used for cooking. Learn More

Jojoba oil is a liquid wax extracted from the nut of an indigenous American shrub that goes by the scientific name Simmondsia chinensis, a misnomer as the plant has nothing to do with China. The shrubby tree still grows wild in the United States, mainly in the arid regions of the Southwestern states. The Jojoba nut has been used by the Native American tribes from time immemorial, its common name coming from ‘Hohowi’, the O’odham name for the nut. They used a paste of the nut for skin and hair care, and the whole nuts as survival food in emergencies. Wildlife also have their fill of both the leaves and the nuts which also go by common names like deer nut, goat nut, pignut etc., but the wax that constitutes nearly 50% of the nut is generally indigestible. It passes unchanged through the digestive tract of mammals, including humans, making this edible oil an effective laxative. Jojoba oil is unique in that, unlike most other vegetable oils, it closely resembles sebum, a waxy substance produced by our skin glands, so it can act as a natural skin conditioner. Learn More

Pumpkin seed oil is derived from the unhusked seeds of pumpkin and has been traditionally made in parts of Europe for more than 300 years. Cucurbita pepo is the taxonomic name of pumpkins, but there are dozens of cultivars and subspecies from which this oil is now made. The oil is pressed from these seeds and then used for a wide variety of culinary, and medicinal applications, and is now available in many parts of the world. The oil is either a dark green or a deep red, depending on the thickness of the oil, but when the oil begins to brown, it takes on a bitter taste. In culinary applications, it is used as a salad dressing, in desserts, or even added to soups and stews for a nutty sweetness. However, due to its low smoke point, it is not used as a cooking oil. Heating the oil would neutralize the polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats that are found in such significant quantities in this oil, including oleic, linoleic, palmitic, stearic, linolenic and other fatty acids. Wheat germ oil is derived from the germ of the wheat berry, which is the nutrient-dense core that feeds the plant as it grows. This also means that the majority of usable chemicals and compounds are found in this germ. Since oil makes up roughly 10-14% of the wheat germ, which is an agricultural byproduct, so extract processes like pressing and solvent extraction are used. The more refined wheat germ oil is, the fewer usable nutrients it contains for human health. The uses of wheat germ oil are in culinary applications, but generally, this specialty oil is used for medicinal and therapeutic purposes. The many benefits of this oil come from the rich supply of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids it contains, as well as vitamins A, E, B, and D and other volatile compounds and antioxidants. However, it is important to note that wheat germ oil has approximately 8 times more omega-6 (linoleic acid) fatty acids than omega-3 (gamma-linolenic) fatty acids, which is far from the ideal 1:1 ratio of these fats. Walnut oil is a nut oil obtained from walnuts. Depending on the varieties of walnuts, there are some types of walnut oils. It is a good source of omega – 3 fatty acids, which are essential fatty acids. So the body needs to get them from diet. Walnut oil has a nutty flavor and a light aroma. Walnut oil makes a nice base oil ( carrier oil ) for massage and aromatherapy uses. It is used as a cosmetic ingredient in many skin care products. This oil has immense nutritional value and is safe to be taken in diet. Almond oil comes from the most common walnut species Juglans regia, which is known as the common walnut or the English walnut. The oil can be obtained via solvent extraction or cold pressing. The cold pressed organic walnut oil is best for health. The demand for walnut oil has decreased in recent time, which has led to lower production. Most of the production today comes from France. Another kind of walnut oil is the black walnut oil which is obtained from black walnuts, Juglans nigra. Black walnut oil has got its own unique combination of health benefits, which are quite different from the common walnut oil. Black walnut is more of a medicinal herb and its oil too possesses many medicinal properties. Walnut trees are probably native to Himalayas. Presently in Central Asia in Kyrgyzstan, there are complete forests of walnuts. This leads to tremendous production of walnuts. Learn More

macadamia nuts, which are one of the most popular varieties of nuts, due to their rich flavor and high nutrient profile. However, what’s even more valuable is the macadamia nut oil that can be extracted from these nuts for a number of uses. The fatty acid composition of macadamia nut oil makes it extremely valuable as a vegetable oil for frying or cooking; it is composed of nearly 60% oleic acid, as well as significant levels of palmitoleic acid and smaller amounts of linoleic acid. Although many people consider “fats” to be bad across the board, the truth of the matter is that we need certain monounsaturated fats to balance our cholesterol levels and ensure that our bodies run smoothly. Macadamia nut oil is available in many places around the world, although it isn’t as popular as other alternative vegetable oils. Macadamia nut oil is clear to slightly amber in color and retains a slightly nutty flavor, as macadamia nuts are quite strong in their flavor. In terms of uses, macadamia nut oil is used in culinary applications (typically as a frying oil), but also in certain cosmetics for the hair and skin. The composition of the acid makes it very stable, which is why it is so highly praised in cosmetic applications. Learn More

Occassionaly sold under the enchanting Chinese name of May chang, this essential oil is more commonly marketed under its botanical name of Litsea cubeba, and this is how we offer it at Quinessence. It is also occasionally referred to as Exotic Verbena or Tropical Verbena, although despite the references to verbena the plant is not related in any way to true verbena (Lippia citriodora). The association to this name would appear to be due to the similarity in fragrance. rom the Lauraceae family, Litsea cubeba is a small deciduous tree that grows to a height of 5 to 8 metres (16-26 feet), with a smooth trunk measuring 6-20 centimetres (2.5 to 8 inches) in diameter. Sometimes known as the Mountain Spice Tree and Chinese Pepper, the tree bears white or pale yellow, lemon-scented flowers, and small fruits which are similar in shape to small peppers, from which the word ‘cubeb’ is derived. Measuring between 4 to 6 millimetres in diameter, the aromatic fruits are almost spherical in shape and green in colour, turning red then dark brown upon ripening. When dried, these small fruits look like large, dried black peppers and provide the source of the essential oil, although oil can be extracted from the flowers, branches, bark, roots and leaves too. The oil derived from these parts of the plant do not have the same odour as the fruits. The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation of the fresh fruits, and yields a pale yellow liquid with a fresh, intensely lemon fragrance with fruity and spicy undertones. For many people, the aroma brings back happy memories of sherbet-lemon sweets! Its lemon fragrance is similar to, but much sweeter and more refined than lemongrass, which has grassy, fishy and fatty backnotes. Due to this lemon sweetness, essential oil of litsea cubeba is used extensively in the perfumery, cosmetic and flavouring industries. Learn More
